Broken? – Introduction and Poem

I am an average, middle-aged wife and homemaker, mom and grandmother, from a small town in the Pacific Northwest who has been blessed to receive a spiritual conversion that truly changed my life.  I was raised Catholic and didn’t know that Catholics could have conversions. (Isn’t that just for those converting to Catholicism?)  I also didn’t know that God still speaks to His people. He does; and to each of us in ways that we can learn to understand.  Not only that, but we can talk with Him like we do a friend, and most amazingly, we can learn why He created us and what our purpose for being here is, according to the ‘plan’ He has for each of us as unique individuals.

Part of this process for me was discovering a wonderful faith formation program, or course of study (Disciples of Jesus & Mary), where I did learn to hear and talk with God.  It is based on the teaching of the Church along with the lives of the saints and is one of the most valuable things I have ever done.  Toward the end of the program I began having these insights that showed me how crazy ‘the world’ is because of secular influences, and because many of us live and behave as if God doesn’t exist.  I was also granted the huge grace of seeing how, in my own life, I had been walking on the path to destruction, and how, through a sincere change of heartI was able to say “Yes.”, to the Lord and allow Him to show me and guide me along the narrow path, the path to salvation.

The following poem is the result of these insights.  Truly the work of the Holy Spirit, the words simply bubbled up into my heart.  I offer it in the hope that it will speak to your heart.  I shared the poem with my spiritual director and he told me that poetry is ‘experience crystallized’.  I had not heard that before, but it was certainly true about this poem.  After reflecting on this for a while the idea came to me that I could explain each stanza of the poem, kind of like St. John of the Cross does.  My insights have more to do with ‘the signs of the times’ and how, although we seem to be so advanced, in many ways we are farther from God than ever, and also what we need in order to get on, and stay on, the right path.

For the next year I will explain one stanza at a time sharing the gifts and lessons the Lord has packed into them, and what I see from the perspective of a woman who is in love with Jesus and on a deliberate path to serve Him according to my Plan Of Life (POL).  The goal is to post these on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month.

I am a Catholic who is faithful to the magisterial teaching of the Holy Catholic Church, I write from this perspective and share my own experiences in the hope that they may be of help to others on the journey……for the Greater Glory of God and the salvation of souls!

Broken?                                                                           Explanations

In a world of broken people                                          Stanza I – Part I
You alone can make us whole.
Wounded hearts and minds and spirits,                       Stanza I – Part II
broken bodies, battered souls.

Come Lord Jesus to repair us,
with Your gift of healing love.                                       Stanza II – Part I
Send Your Spirit to prepare us,
for our home in heaven above.                                    Stanza II – Part II

For the earth is not our homeland,
but a testing ground of faith.                                        Stanza III – Part I
Ever onward You implore us,
as You fill us with Your Grace.                                    Stanza III – Part II

Give us strength to meet the challenge,
that the world does but provide.                                  Stanza IV – Part I
Let us see the spiritual battle,
and from TRUTH, let us not hide.                               Stanza IV – Part II

Flesh will tell us to seek comfort.
“We deserve it!  We work hard!”                                  Stanza V – Part I
Yet our spirits truly suffer,
when the ‘self’ gets high regard.                                 Stanza V – Part II

Broken, to ‘The World’ means useless.
“We must be strong, and never weak!”                       Stanza VI – Part I
But in contrast to this vision,
brokenness is what You seek.                                    Stanza VI – Part II

For when our human strength prevails,
Pride and self-reliance grow.                                      Stanza VII – Part I
We then forget that we are creatures,
whom to God, due worship owe.                                Stanza VII – Part II

Blinded by success and praises,
of our fellow man trek we.                                          Stanza VIII – Part I
Developing more innovations,
from pain and death to be set free.                            Stanza VIII – Part II

But peace cannot be found this way,
nor will lasting joy be had.
Only temporary pleasures,
self put first in a world gone mad.

Your call Dear Lord, is to something better,
where peace and love and grace abound.
The soul united with its Master,
this is where true joy is found.

You never said it would be easy,
following Your footsteps here.
In fact You promised pain and sorrow;
much suffering for those who persevere.

“No pain, No gain!”  You led the way,
and showed the path we too must find.
Your saints remind us through example,
on what to set our heart and mind.

“Take up your cross” You tell us still,
in this is our salvation won.
Not by strength or mighty actions,
but little things, done with great love.

For hidden in each loving gesture,
and act of kindness done for you.
lie grace and healing; Divine compassion,
and soon we see they help us too.

It’s through our service to one another
that we be-come like You Lord.
Turning strangers into family,
hearts and minds with one accord.

Building up our Father’s Kingdom,
strengthening Christ’s Body too,
heart-to-heart, one soul to another,
living as God tells us to.

Loving obedience to Your law Lord,
submission to Your Holy Will,
this is where we discover freedom,
in You we find our hearts are still.

True peace and love we find at last,
and now we see with clarity.
You take us broken and make us whole,
so shall we be, for all eternity!

Love & Prayers,
Becky

About Becky Ward

Becky is a wife, mother of four (One is in heaven), grandmother of five, and a ‘re-formed Catholic’ who, after receiving the gift of a deep conversion in 2006, and working through the Disciples of Jesus and Mary faith formation program, now considers herself to be ‘fully Catholic’ What this means is that she now, at last, understands and appreciates the beauty of the Catholic faith in such a way that she wants to share it with everyone. “I’ve heard that the Blessed Mother told a visionary, “If Catholics really lived their faith, the whole world would be Catholic.” I see the truth in this, and it is my deepest hope to be a living example that draws others to Jesus, and through Him, home to the Catholic Church.” Given the nickname Rebel-Becca by her mother, Becky strongly identifies with St. John the Baptist and his call to “make straight the path of the Lord.”, and with his role as “Friend of the Bridegroom”. The poem, “Broken?”, written through her hand, is a reflection of the journey of the soul, and Becky explains what the Holy Spirit is teaching her as she writes posts for each stanza.

      Jim,
You may feel lost to yourself, but you are never lost to God.  He never takes his beautiful eyes off of you.

    • Becky313

Thank you, Becky. I enjoyed reading your poem. I don’t suppose you would mind me (us) sending it out to my friends and family–? Happy Easter. Halleluiah!

    • Becky313

Please do!  I am delighted that you want to share it!  :)

Dear Becky, Your story is so similar to mine.  I too was under so many mistaken impressions! Only God knows how many times I have turned away from Him, thinking His Spirit was pure hysteria, as my doctor at the time tried to make me believe, until finally I felt Jesus’ presence with such force, that I just couldn’t mistake His voice.  He has done so much for me and worked so many wonders in my life! Without Him I couldn’t have done anything of all that I have achieved.  He has done great things for me and I am never happier than when I can do something for Him in return.

Thank you Becky for this beautiful poem! It really speaks to the heart! I love that line “brokenness is what You seek” All too often my brokenness scares me. But in the end it has always draws us closer to Him. :)
Thank You again! God Bless and Happy Easter!

    Kindred spirit you and me

Without THEM I am not me.

    God Bless your insights

Wow, thank you, Becky for sharing your story and giving us this wonderful Spirit-filled Poem.  Though my experience of God is never earth-shaking, as a Cradle Catholic I have grown knowing and feeling He is ever with me –  ”…….There have been times when I’ve turned from His Presence,  and I’ve walked other paths, other ways….but I’ve  called on His name, in the dark of my shame, and His Mercy was gentle as silence”… I Hymn I love singing to Him every evening before I go to bed……so I always “Walk by Faith not by Sight” or emotions.

  • Mobrien7

    Hello,

Thank you for the poem and I am looking forward to your future comments on it.  This sounds like something that may help some of my family members and their faith.

I also notices the link referenced in the text is to a SOLT priest.  The same SOLT as Fr. Corapi?

    Mike

    • Becky313

Yes, the same SOLT as Fr. Corapi.  We are praying mighitly for him.

  • Liz_lee2chan

So beautiful ….  I envy you … how I wish I can hear the Lord speak to me …

    • Becky313

If I can learn to hear Him speak to me, anyone else can too…..if they have the desire to learn!  :)   We just need to be taught!!

      God Bless!

    Hi Becky,
The Disciples of Jesus and Mary program sounds like something I would be interested in. Can you give me some information about it? I could give you my email if that would be helpful.
Thank you and God bless you,
    Marcia

    • Becky313

      Marcia,

Is the formation program still available?  I know that Fr. Pinto passed away and I am sure he is missed by his community.  But, I am sure that his intercession is even more effective for souls now that he is among the heavenly hosts!

    • Becky313

YES!  The program is still available.  One of the most beautiful things about this program is that it is for the laity….and we pass it on to others…very much like what Jesus’ disciples did originally.

I believe you are right about Fr. Pinto’s intercession being more effective now.  We are truly blessed!  Thank you for asking!

Your poem was a great blessing to me. Every stanza rings true. It is so simple, so powerful, and so encouraging. I learned this: brokenness because of our sin is always better than pride because of some personal ‘triumph’ over sin–pride is the greater satanic foothold. “a broken and contrite heart He will not despise”.

Hi Peter, thanks for your kind words.  Is your picture upside-down on purpose?  It makes me think of how my life seems sometimes…..a great visual reminder that made me smile!!

  • Becky Ward

Thank you Rosanne!  I am amazed sometimes when I go back and read the poem and posts again.  I think , “Did I really write this??”  The Holy Spirit can truly work through the poorest vessels.
