Two of the four priests were at the church I started to go to. I only went to the particular church because my parents belonge there too, and I needed the support. The church is about 40 minsutes away from my house one way. When neither priest were able to direct me in a way that my heart understood, than I went to a church closer to my house. I was not relating to anything that priest said, so I tried the last church. That is where the director I have now is located. I prayed about finding someone who could help direct me, and at the time did not think that I even knew exactly how to pray. I did learn a very wonderful fact about Jesus though. He knows what is in your heart, and whether you think you can pray or not, He will take you by the hand and lead you to where you need to be, as long as you invite Him in, and allow Him too. My prayer life has gotten much better, and my love for Christ is coming out in everything I do. It was worth the trials and finding that right director. Have faith and Christ will lead you to someone that you can benefit from their direction. Keep your eyes on Christ, and your heart open. Let Him lead you...

It was truly by the grace of God. I prayed to find one that would work for me. I had appointments with four other priests, it is difficult to find the right one. One spoke way over my head and ended up more confused than before, another was too short without having enough explanation, one stood me up, and the last one was a hit! It is very difficult to find the right director. What doesn't work for one will work for another. The most important thing is to pray, and let the Spirit direct you to where you need to be.

Dear Cathy in Christ - fantastic! Can you share how you found both directors? It would be helpful for our readers.

I have only within the past year started with spiritual direction, and have changed directors once to find the right fit. The right fit is so important, and the last one I had I could not understand, as he would talk above what I could comprehend. I have foun a new one and I love it! I can understand what he says (he puts things in everyday language) and it has been so beneficial in my prayer life. I find now that everything I do is one form of prayer or another! The information provided above was very eye opening. I did not realize that there was so much involved. My goal is to get close to Christ, and I am fixated on that.

It is generally considered unwise to have a director as a friend. Though they may be friends in the sense of the love and care that comes with healthy direction, but beyond direction meetings, this could easily become distracting and the director is likely to lose a valuable position of detachment and objectivity. As well, if the director and directee are of the opposite sex, in my opinion, it should never be the case that they share a friendship outside of direction.

This was so helpful. Thanks! Is there ever a time/scenario where one can have their priest friend as their director... or do they always have to be separate?
