Father John I would frist like to thank you for this wonderful website it has been for me a rich blessing.
My priest and confessor for the past several years was the one who recomended a Spiritual Director and guided me right to him, I feel my prayer has been answered and I begin my new journey with my first meeting tomorrow.
When God places something in your heart He makes way the path.

This is fantastic - thank you so much for clarifying this. I see through your description that my confessor has been providing spiritual direction all along - and while I have thought at times that I need a 'spiritual director' and I wish it were him - it HAS been!! DUH! I am truly blessed - thank you for helping me see that.

PS - as you point out that the confessional is not the place for long conversations, there have been times I have asked to meet with him for a half hour or so to discuss a specific item - and he has always made time for that.

Thanks for forwarding it. I look forward to Fr. John's perspective on it. What's a few weeks when I have been trying to cope with this for a few years?

Once again, Father John, you write like you are talking to me directly even though I am not the one who asked this question. Thank you very much. Now I understand why my regular Confessor spends a bit of more time with me during Confession in encouraging me and advising me on how to discern God's direction and wishes in the areas I find myself confused. Though I have yet, to arrange to begin real Spiritual Direction with the Priest I have identified, I now realise from your answer to the question that my regular Confessor has been doing just what you state. He understands me and my situation very well because I have been candid with him about my personal life situation and state of life. Therefore, he is able to clear my doubts in the instancies where he senses I am anxious and unsure if God is pleased with my punny efforts!!! He ensures I leave the Confessional in total peace and assurance!!! God bless you both

Fr. John, at some point would you address the issues facing modern mystics? For example, most spiritual directors do not seem to have experience with mysticism. Even some priests I have encountered do not believe that God any longer acts in this way with His people, but it has been my personal experience that He does. It is very difficult finding others with similar experiences. Fortunately, I have found an elderly priest who can find occasional time to help me, and I have received advice from a priest who has written extensively on the topic. I think that means I have perhaps been blessed more than other mystics. However, the priests to whom I can go for confession are not mystics; in some cases, they have not even accepted mysticism, and I am left with making partial confessions, carefully avoiding anything that seems out of the ordinary and too supernatural. It is all quite disappointing and frustrating. Any advice?
