Spiritual Resolutions for the New Year?

Well, its that time of year again. New Year’s resolutions abound.

Looking back at last year, did you grow in your faith and holiness? If someone close to you were asked this question about you, would their answer be a resolute “yes!”

If not, do you have a purposeful plan to grow closer to Christ this year? Are you fully prepared to meet God face to face? Do you plan to be?

Not too long ago I attended my brother Shannon’s funeral – he was 35 years old when he died. Before that, I attended my sister Linda’s funeral – she was 32. In between these, my niece Callie was 2 years old when she was ripped from this world. No one saw any of these devastating and sudden losses coming. All three were healthy only hours before. Each of their bodies failed, almost instantly, in different and unexpected ways. Each of them lived as if they had long lives ahead of them. Each of them were wrong. One moment they were healthy, spending time with family, playing, eating, sleeping… and then they were suddenly standing before God.

What did they see? What will you see? When will you find yourself standing before God? In the next ten minutes? The next hour? Tomorrow? Next week? Are you ready?

If not, what will it take for you to get ready? Is there really anything more important than being ready? Is there really anything more important than where you will spend eternity once this very brief life has passed? Have you considered that even if you live to be a hundred, in contrast with eternity, one hundred years is like a grain of sand on the sea shore.

Each minute you chose the trajectory of your soul. Each minute you decide what God will ratify if you end up standing before him in the next. What is your chosen trajectory? What if you think it is heaven when it really is not? If you are committed to your Catholic faith, can you clearly articulate the criteria upon which you will be judged according to the teachings of Christ and his Church? Could you show someone where your views are justified in the Catechism or scripture? Are you really as ready as you can be, or do you just hope that you are?

My hope and prayer is that this moment, in this new year, you are as ready as you can be. If you are not, my prayer is that you will move spiritual growth to the top of your New Year’s resolution list, get a clear plan in place, and quickly begin aggressively pursuing your relationship with Christ and his Church.

That said, I wish you a very happy New Year! If your last moment comes this year – my prayer is that you will find yourself embraced by Christ and hearing the words, “well done – enter into the joy of your master…”

Seek Him – Find Him – Follow Him

Dan

It is so amazing how fragile life is. A six foot six, three hundred pound left tackle or a less than a pound preborn child, each life can be extinguished in the blink of an eye, each to stand before his/her maker. Which is more pure? Which is more worthy? Which can face his/her God with the expectation of joining Him in heaven?

There is no law, that is a law, without a punishment for breaking that law. If a law has no punishment, then it is nothing more than a slogan. But in the case of God's law, He states that anyone who breaks it will die (“Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die. (Ezekiel 18:4)).

Therefore, the righteous judgment of God upon anyone who would break the law is that he should be damned. BUT God in His great mercy has provided a way out of this damnation. The provision is found only in God the Son, Jesus (In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:14 (NASB)) — (And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 3:16 (NASB)) — (For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16)) — (“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) (NASB)) — (“And He Himself bore our sins in His Body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by his wounds we were healed(1 Pet. 2:24 (NASB)).

Therefore, we can see that salvation is deliverance of the sinner from the righteous judgment of God. Salvation means that we are “saved” from that judgment through the death and reasurection of Jesus, our Lord. (“For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; (1PET 3-8))

Know that, whether six foot six, 300 pounds –or- less than a pound, it is only by the grace of God that we will enter the kingdom of God (“But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus…(Acts 15:11)

After reading this you by now have assumed that I am not of the Catholic
persuasion. And rightly so. I am however of the catholic persuasion. It is my belief that God created man and, like minded, men created organized religion in an attempt to guide themselves as they saw fit to God. Who, of course, already knew where they were.

If I have offended anyone, please accept my most sincere apologies for having intruded. May God Bless you and keep you

Dan, thank you for this GREAT article!!! Your sentiments echo our Priest's homily today! He said that many of us are infants when it comes to our faith. It's time we take back the ground the enemy has stolen in our lives and roll up our sleeves. Do we have a plan to grow closer to Christ? His arms are always open. Our days are truly numbered.

This year shall be heaven if we look to Jesus, loving Him completely. How many of us have been in love? The feelings of excitement, and joy at seeing our beloved. We get warm fuzzies! The anticipation of seeing the one that we are in love with. Let us all look to our Lord this way, asking him for this grace. He wants nothing from us,but to make us happy in this life, and most especially in the next.
Why should any of us want anything less than Heaven? Purgatory is painful. I have heard that the worst pain on earth cannot compare to the least pain in purgatory!
If you only knew how short this time is on this earth you would not waste a second. Look at this earth as a clock. In heaven there is no time.
This year we must pray for our priests, and the conversion of sinners! Years ago during lent I said a rosary every day for the conversion of sinners. Little did I know that I was praying for myself! Just as Mary brought Jesus to us. She lead me directly to her Son Jesus. In fact it was a protestant who came to me in the lunchroom at High school asking me if I was saved? I said “no I'm Catholic”! He asked me if I wanted to ask Jesus into my heart? I said yes. Little did I know at the time that I was already saved. As a Catholic Christian. The protestants don't know that as Catholics we are saved at Baptism, and that our salvation is on going. I have my Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, Body Blood, Soul and Divinity! Each time that We receive Jesus in Communion, we are asking Him into our hearts, becoming united with Him in a special intimate way! What more can we want? Jesus in the Eucharist “is a little bit of heaven on earth”!

Thank you Dan. This article is marvelous. I particularly love the “Hellish Back=up Plan”. It is a fitting wake-up call to shake us out of our comfort zones and get working on your Eternal Goal. It has shown me I need to work harder if I hope to move from the crawling toddler stage to standing up before I can take the first steps. What can I share with you, God's people on this Website?

For some reason ( I always find the excuse that as a71-year old widow and living alone I find it hard to fit into the Residential area Prayer Group) I have been unable to join the Small Christian Communitiy which brings Parishioners in this Estate who pray together, read the Scriptures, pray and discuss their Faith and the problems they are facing in their families and lives.

Now I was stuck on what to do because Faith must be shared outside the Sunday Mass attendance. Then I just prayed. “Jesus you know me better than I know myself. It is desirable that I join some group with whom I can grow together in our Faith. So, can You please sort out this small problem for me? I am sure You can and You will”. You know what Dan? A friend of mine led me to the Divine Mercy Apostolate Centre. Now I am a very happy member of the Cenacle which meets every Tuesday. We also have a whole day of Workshop, Prayer and Spiritual Guidance every 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. We study Saint Faustina's life and the Diary. We invited different speakers for each day which concludes with the Eucharistic Sacrifice. You see, Jesus did exactly what I was sure He would do!!! And, you know what? The lady who introduced me to this Group is, in fact, not a very active Member and rarely atends the weekly Cenacle or the twice-weekly Workshops.

I just said, Thank You Jesus for guiding me, yet again, and led me to where You wanted me to be.

I ssincerely recommend this Devotion to my God's people on this Website. It is really a wonderful Faith-building and Christ's Love-filled Devotion.

I wish all of you a blessed New Year
